As we approach Autumn in the southern hemisphere, there are subtle changes occurring in the landscape and weather patterns. I long for the cooler nights after the long, hot summer we have had in Sydney this year. A 25 degree day is perfect for my body.
The seasons are in a constant cycle of change, as are our bodies. The cells in our body replicate continually according to the body’s needs, without our awareness. Although, keeping our cells healthy is a conscious decision of healthy lifestyle choices. Our DNA is stored within the nucleus of each cell, and our cells have many ways to keep them safe; however, research has shown that a poor diet – one low in antioxidants and other important phytonutrients – and environmental exposure to toxins, like pesticides, can cause our DNA to become damaged. Damage to DNA is called a mutation.
Eating a diet of unprocessed, whole foods is essential to healthy cells and a healthy body. Whole grains, like quinoa, oats, brown rice and spelt, protect and support healthy cells, whereas processed grain products, such as white bread and cereals made from refined grains, provide little protection from cellular damage. Our cells also require healthy fats, such as avocado, fish, nuts and coconut oil, plus foods rich in anti-oxidants like fresh fruits and vegetables, every day. Try to eat a plate with colours of the rainbow and no white foods, and see how your health improves. If you have trouble maintaining a healthy diet, seek out a naturopath or dietician to help you have healthier cells and a healthier body.
