“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” – John Lubbock

Recently I took a short, well-deserved break.   I find taking short breaks throughout the year a necessary part of a well-balanced life – time to reflect, rejuvenate and commune with nature.  Time to do nothing except enjoy the sights.

This year the Bowen Association of Australia held its AGM in Adelaide giving me the opportunity to visit the City of Churches for the first time. We decided to take a ‘slow’ journey from Sydney to Adelaide on the Indian Pacific, allowing time to unwind and to see some of the outback.

There were so many ‘wow’ moments on this trip: sunset over the Blue Mountains; Broken Hill shrouded in fog; red desert that inspired Jackson Pollock; Adelaide’s lush green hills; wild seals on Kangaroo Island; plus the food and wine Adelaide has to offer.  Although it was in the middle of the ‘big chill’ we have been experiencing, the weather didn’t deter us from experiencing nature at its best.  While travelling to Kangaroo Island, rainbows followed us throughout the day – such a magical  experience I will never forget.

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” – Albert Einstein

Finding time to reconnect can be a challenge in this busy world.  If you cannot find the time for a break away from the busyness of life, try and escape into your mind for a few minutes a day.  Meditation for 20 minutes, twice a day, can improve your health and calm your mind. If that seems unachievable, try just 5 minutes a day and build up from there.  Walking in nature is another way that you can clear your mind and re-energize your spirit.  Try going for a short walk in your lunch break.

If you don’t know how to start to learn how to meditate, why not join a group in your area or download some of the free apps of relaxation meditations.  Whatever you do, try to find time to relax, be idle and not feel guilty for doing so.

Wishing you health, harmony and happiness

Dry Skin

Winter weather can dry out your skin causing flakiness, redness and itchiness.  Here are some solutions:

– Air conditioning and heating can dehydrate you and contribute to skin dryness.  Solution: install a humidifier.
– Harsh cold winds can cause skin damage.  Solution: wear gloves and a scarf to protect skin.
– Hot showers dry out the skin.  Solution: turn down the heat, take quicker showers and use a soap free organic shower gel.  I love A’Kin Orange Blossom Body Wash.
– Moisturize day and night, preferably natural products suitable for your skin type – avoid mineral oils. My favourite organic skincare is the Love System.
– Drink plenty of water – try hot water with lemon, ginger and honey to increase your fluid intake or herb teas.
– Wear natural fibres as synthetics can irritate the skin – cotton, silk and bamboo are soft on the skin.
– Wash clothing in perfume free products for sensitive skin. I useEnjo products for washing and cleaning to eliminate harsh chemicals from my home.
– Try dry skin brushing – it removes dead skin cells, improves circulation and lymphatic drainage, detoxifying the whole body.

Always seek medical help if dry skin persists after trying these tips.

Loving-kindness Meditation

What is Loving-kindness  or Metta Meditation?

Metta Meditation is a simple practice of directing well-wishes towards yourself and then to other people.

Mettaor loving-kindness meditation, is a method of developing compassion. It comes from the Buddhist tradition, but it can be adapted and practiced by anyone, regardless of religious affiliation; loving-kindness meditation is essentially about cultivating love.

How do I do it?
Sitting comfortably with your eyes closed, imagine what you wish for your life.  Popular phrases are:
May I be healthy and strong. May I be happy. May I be filled with ease.

You can then direct these positive phrases to someone you love or has helped you, then to your family, those you need to forgive and then to the wider world.

Sending ‘love, peace and light’ to the world can help create real change especially when done in a group.
So start up your own group or if you live in Sydney’s north-west, why not join us on the first Friday of each month.
