Bowen Technique (Bowtech) is a gentle form of body work in which very subtle moves over soft tissue or fascia, stimulate specific receptors that enable the body to correct dysfunctions and restore homeostasis within the body.
Where did The Bowen Technique originate?
The Bowen Technique (Bowtech) was developed in the 1950’s by the late Tom Bowen from Geelong, Australia. Tom Bowen became a celebrated therapist, regularly treating over 13,000 patients each year. In 1974, he invited Oswald Rentsch and his wife Elaine to study with him and document his work. They began to teach the technique in 1986. Since then, over 20,000 therapists worldwide have been trained as Bowen therapists.
What is the Bowen Technique (Bowtech) and how does it work?
Bowtech is a gentle form of body work in which very subtle moves over soft tissue or fascia stimulate specific receptors that enable the body to correct dysfunctions and restore homoeostasis within the body.
There are frequent but very essential pauses throughout the session (approx. 2 minutes.) that allow the body time to respond and begin the healing process. The practitioner can target a specific problem or address the body as a whole.
Unlike many other hands-on therapies, there is no forceful manipulation in Bowen Technique. A Bowen therapist is able to discern stress build up in muscles and other soft tissue enabling them to perform specific Bowen moves to assist recovery.
The Bowen Technique not only addresses the musculo-skeletal framework, but also the fascia, nerves and internal organs. The body’s biofeedback response improves circulation and lymphatic drainage and aids in the assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins.
A Bowen Technique session takes 30 – 60 minutes and can be performed directly on the skin or through the clothing. Following a session, a deep sense of overall relaxation is felt and it is advisable to drink plenty of filtered water each day (approx. 6-8 glasses) to assist in the release of toxins from the body. It is also advisable to refrain from any other body therapies for a week following a Bowen session, as this may interrupt the flow and effectiveness of the treatment.
What is Mind and Body Bowen Technique?
The Mind and Body Bowen therapist performs the same Bowen ‘moves’ or procedures, as well as ‘listening’ to the body and its responses following each set of ‘moves’. This assists the therapist to link the responses in the body to the meridians and their associated muscle groups and emotions, according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine model. This technique allows the client’s story to unfold. As the emotional patterns are identified, the body then releases or ‘unwinds’ past trauma, emotions and blocks that have stopped the flow of energy in the body, caused pain, stress and diseased states.
